Capital City Viper Team of the Week

Mites Travel Red

Capital City Viper Mites Travel Red is composed of nine 2nd graders from various school districts in Central, PA.  Although only a few of the team played together last year, most from 3 separate Recreational Viper teams.  They have quickly formed friendships that make them appear they have been best friends for life. It is so rewarding to see them pass to their teammates in a 2-0 situation and celebrate their teammates' goals more than their own. While suiting up and stretching pre-game, the teams' favorite song to play in the locker room is Shipping Up to Boston, which helps the kids wake up for our early 7:30 AM games in the Philadelphia area.

Rule #1 is to HAVE FUN!  The team typically reserve just a few minutes at the end of each practice to play some fun games, like ultimate handball or even a game of baseball where the outfield has to field a hard wrist shot, make 3x quick passes, and score on the goalie before the offense (batters) can skate a lap and return to the goal line.

Rule #2 is to SKATE HARD! These kids push so hard during all their ADM Clinics and team practices, including every shift of every game.  It is amazing to witness 9 young kids push so hard, free of any fear, and striving hard to get better. Each practice, they work on skating, passing, shooting, stick-handling as well as continuously working on defensive zone breakouts and reading their relationship to the puck/teammates/opposing players in our F1-F4 team concept, which seems to improve almost daily.

Rule #3 is SPORTSMANSHIP.  Hockey, and all sports help build young athletes character, and specifically the Capital City Vipers live and breathe by being a values-based organization.

The Mites Travel Red will play at the Giant Center on December 2, 2018 at 5:00PM for MITES on ICE. Come cheer on the Capital City Vipers (MITES RED) The team will be going to two tournaments this year. One at York after Christmas and one in Hershey for St. Patrick's Day.

The team has three amazing coaches Matt, Mike, and Jamie. They put a lot of time and energy into practices and games to ensure that not only are the boys learning and developing, but most importantly having fun and loving the game of hockey!

Thanks Coach Matt, and Jess for the article.

Go Vipers!
